Antenatal Care

During pregnancy, you are advised to access antenatal care. This is to ensure that you and baby remain well and also to give you information about your choices and options for birth. We do understand that this can be both an exciting and anxious time for you, and so our aim is to give you expert care to ensure you have a positive pregnancy and birth experience. Pregnancy can be a worrying time and we want to help you feel relaxed and confident throughout.

All antenatal appointments are conducted in your own home or a mutually agreeable place. Normally you will see the same midwife throughout. Appointments are typically every 4 weeks until 28 weeks of pregnancy, then every 2-3 weeks until 37 weeks of pregnancy, then weekly until birth.

Serenity - Noninvasive Prenatal Testing

Noninvasive prenatal testing, or NIPT, is a genetic test designed to screen a pregnancy for chromosome abnormalities like Down syndrome. Traditionally, this testing was performed through less sensitive screening methods or through invasive procedures that carried a risk of miscarriage. With the advent of cutting-edge NIPT technology, we can now test for these conditions in a safe and reliable manner, using just a small sample of mum’s blood.

We partner with leading genetics laboratory CooperGenomics to offer our patients the SerenitySM noninvasive prenatal test. Serenity NIPT is available for women who are at least 10 weeks pregnant and want to learn about the health of their growing baby.

Serenity NIPT has the ability to screen for:

  • Common Aneuploidies: these are the three most common live-birth aneuploidies
    • Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)
    • Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome)
    • Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)
  • All Autosomal Aneuploidies: these are changes in any chromosome that can result in pregnancy loss or developmental abnormalities
  • Sex Aneuploidies: these are changes in the sex chromosomes, X and Y; if sex aneuploidies are screened for and not identified, the baby’s sex can be determined

Serenity NIPT offers high sensitivity and specificity, giving you confidence in the accuracy of their results. Typically, Serenity NIPT results are available within 3-5 working days from the time the sample is received at CooperGenomics’ laboratory, and expert genetic counsellors are available to review all abnormal results. Serenity NIPT also has the lowest rate of test failure available, so there’s little chance that you would need to repeat the test and delay receiving your results.
